The Sinofon Centre for Excellence in Research is an academic unit of the Faculty of Arts at Palacký University Olomouc. It was established during the sustainability phase of the research project Sinophone Borderlands – Interaction at the Edges and continues to pursue its research activities to this day.
The Centre is currently headed by Dr. Filip Kraus. It offers 18 full-time equivalent (FTE) positions and employs 25 researchers. Their work covers a broad spectrum of topics related to East, Southeast, and Central Asia, with a particular focus on interactions between these regions and the wider world.
To support its research activities, the Centre is organized into four research clusters focusing on anthropology; arts and humanities; political science; and language and literature. These clusters are further supported by three specialized laboratories: the Laboratory of Material Culture, the Language Laboratory, and the Lab for Data and Technology.
